A School In The Desert

Al Khan Al Ahmar school is located in the desert beside the road to Jericho in the West Bank. It was designed by Italian architects and built together with the bedouin community. Constructed from recyclable materials—tyres and mud—it is an example of architectural ingenuity in the face of political instability, regional zoning restrictions and extreme conditions of the desert. In spite of such challenges, the school symbolises hope and promise for the children from a community struggling to preserve their identity.
