Microdistrict living

An explorative glimpse inside an apartment in one of Russia’s microdistricts, with a surprising discovery.

After a nine-year absence, I travelled to Russia in August 2018. The trip was about reconnecting with family and friends, but it also helped me reflect on my childhood. One afternoon we headed out of Moscow to the industrial city of Podolsk, some 44 km away. There, we visited a family friend who lives in one of many microdistricts. It’s been a long time since I’ve visited a microdistrict in Russia…
